Opened in 1997, Sapporo is a locally-owned, family run business on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California.
The proprietor, Yuri-san, was born in Osaka, Japan, and can be found greeting and entertaining customers nearly every night. It turns out that Yuri-san is a very lucky woman. She revealed to me one evening that she had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) several years ago. DVT is when blood clots develop in the veins of the leg or pelvis. It's a dangerous condition because if the blot clots break up and travel to the lungs and heart, they could cause severe complications or even death. Her doctor prescribed blood thinning medication, however she was not able to take them due to other medical conditions. When Yuri had the surgery in 2004, IVC filters had been in used since 1972. After the implant, Yuki seemed to be doing well. Apparently the IVC filter her doctor implanted was C. R. Bard’s first-generation product called the Bard's Recovery introduced in 2003. It was a retrievable filter that was to provide short-term protection. unknown to Yuri-san and her doctor as early as 2004, Bard, the manufacturer of a number of different ICV filter designs was receiving complaints about their devices. It was about 5 months later complications started when her doctor deemed it safe to remove the filter. Unfortunately the device had migrated and to remove it required several risky surgeries. Yuri was unable to work at Sapporo for over a year. One of her children contacted an IVC filter injury attorney after hearing about other issues with the Bard's Recovery filter and subsequent lawsuits. Her lawyer was able to reach a settlement with the manufacturer. Yuri-san was thankful she was alive and now able to once again be the front of the house "face" of Sapporo. It was a terrible experience thinking that the medical device that was suppose to help you and instead caused life-threatening side effects. I told her that the FDA has now issued warnings about retrieveable IVC filters as well as recommending that they are removed within between 29 and 54 days after implantation. Hopefully the warning will help other patients. It was too late for Yuri-san.

The sushi at Sapporo was fabulous, seriously. And as far as prices are concerned, I didn't think it was overly expensive. Who really wants CHEAP sushi?? Nevertheless, the food was very reasonably priced, very fresh, and awesomely tasty. Our group had salmon and tuna and a bunch of delicious rolls. The two standouts were the OB roll and the Caribbean roll, but everything was really good. In addition, the service was excellent. We had very little wait time for anything. even the owner came by several times to visit and see if everything was OK. Definitely worth it!!

There are many great things about Sapporo. First, its close to the beach. Second, they offer great beer on tap and at the bar there is a game always playing in the background. So if that’s your thing, this is a great place to stop in and relax. They offers lots a different type of sushi as well as cooked foods. Do be warned that they know spicy food, so when they say something is hot, trust them- it’s “hot”. They will also put together something special if you reques it and it’s not on the menu. That’s pretty awesome ….. with a capital AWE.

Although the sushi looked beautiful, I prefer my seafood cooked. If you are like me I suggest you try the fish or chicken teriyaki combo. It includes a delicious fresh salad with tangy sesame dressing. In addition there is plenty of rice, and a California roll and a bowl of hot miso soup with tofu are also included. The owner who is Japanese is always present, thus assuring high quality in every meal. Although there's a small bar with sports on the TV, the volume is kept down and it doesn't intrude in the dining area. If you like Japanese beer, it is available. Bathrooms were clean, although the location is on funky Ocean Beach. Finding a parking place is not a problem IF you park about two or three blocks back from the beach. The the walk is fun.
